  • Heinous Crime

This morning my mom showed me the Chinese newspaper about a cousin from the Mainland alledgedly killed his cousin and his family (wife and two daughters). There is an article here in Topnews.in  and earthtimes but according to my mom there is a bit more to the story. Asiaone mentions there was a relationship issue that sparked it all whereas the other two did not mention it.

In my mom's paper, they used CG images and used step by step process how the cousin alledgedly murdered the family. First he stabbed the cousin then put tied up with cables the wife and 2 daughters and put them into a put and poured cement over them. Gruesome! My dad pointed out to one character in the headline used was "animal'.

In the article my parents read there was some rumor that the cousin from China thought his cousin's wife was very attractive and tried to make a play for her. She told her husband and when confronted the cousin from China stabbed him. Gagged and bound his wife and 2 girls and eventually put into a pit to be covered by cement. A colleague reported the cousin missing noticing he never missed work. The colleague called the cousin's home a few times and after the last time a stranger's voice picked up. Sensing trouble, the colleague immediately called the police.

What a sad ending for this family. There is a similar case that occurred involving a relative from China as well.

After telling us this situation this morning, our dad tells us to be leery of having guests over at our home. What does that have to do with anything? This poor Hong Kong guy was killed by his cousin from China. You open up  your home and family to a relative, you don't expect this to happen. My thoughts and prayers for the families. What a tragedy.

  • Gary Gold Smith 'You're Mine' [넌 내꺼] -KR2009

Gary Gold Smith  new song 'You're Mine' [넌 내꺼] is cutesy and different from the heavy hip hop rap songs that have come out of late. I liked watching it. Different that this group has 2 guys and a gal who have some experience in the music industry. I have found an oversaturation of female groups that want to debut. But in Korea, I have noticed a debut is a big deal as it takes tons of time, practice, blood, sweat and tears before you actually do your debut. The companies that churn out idols put a huge investment into their artists. But not all are successful as some budding mentors have found ie former SHINWA members Andy and soon Eric has a group he is forming.

Gary Gold Smith is So Cool

New artists have been on a roll within the past two days, but I've got to say, this new band is one of a kind. Gary Gold Smith consists of Gary (Yoo Geun Bae), Gold (Kim Ji Young), and Smith (Jung Seung Hyun) - exactly as their name says. When I said one of a kind, I meant both music style and the members themselves. Each of the band members have debuted with another group before, so they are no newbies! Gary debuted with the group CnR in 2007; Gold debuted with B.U.T back in 2006, and Smith with Monster in 2007.

Straying away from the hip hop scene that seemingly every group is in now, Gary Gold Smith recently released their first pop / dance single album "So Cool." The album has three tracks including: 'You're Mine' [넌 내꺼] and 'My Love Stalker' [내 사랑 스토커] (regular and instrumental). The MV for 'You're Mine' is out and it definitely distinguishes itself from all the other debuting artists.

There are no scheduled dates for them to perform on upcoming music shows, but they are up for votes on SBS Inkigayo's Take 7 list for next week. Check them out!

  • Chinese "Boys Over Flowers" H4 not F4

So now on top of the Hana Yori Dango 花より男子 "live" versions with Japan, Taiwan and Korea now China is doing and the MV is out for the show. It is noted in the allkpop article they are the H4 and not F4. My guess is H stands for the sound for flower but in Mandarin begins with "H" so it is befitting.

I have seen all versions so far up until this one. I am curious though.  This is the MV for the song loosely translated "For you, I sing this song".

    Michael Jackson's passing

Yesterday, when I was waiting to eat at a restaurant in the Back Bay, I overheard a few people mentioning that the King of Pop was dead. Then someone said, that is not definite but in the hospital. It was later confirmed by my sister when I got home after salsa dancing.

Michael Jackson will be missed. His personal life was fraught with scandal, weirdness and fragility. I remember my first memories of him were from his record breaking album "Thriller" spawning "Beat It," "Billy Jean" and "Thriller". His dancing and music videos revolutionized and influenced performers, dancers, singers worldwide with his dancing style, ground breaking videos, singing and songs. He won 8 grammies from this album alone in the 1980's. I remember alot of kids were enthralled by him and had the one glove, black hat and perfected the moon walk and other dance moves he did. One kid in elementary school had the glove, black hat and the red leather jacket he wore in "Beat It."

You know you make it when Weird Al parodies your song and I loved "Eat It". The first time I watched the video I was laughing so much.

I thought he was a cute kid and later on when he lightened his skin, underwent many plastic surgery procedures to change his face or his brief marriages--one highly publicized one with Lisa Marie Presley. Or the scandal of dangling one of his kids over a window. Then you have the accusations into his personal life from a few years ago.

Throughout his 50 years, he has had his ups and down and it was said he was gearing to make a big comeback concert to start in 2 weeks. But alas, this is not to be. Funny how people will sweep away all the weirdness and controversies and remember him as an icon. But justifiably so, he has been a trailblazer in the POP world, a African American who was listened by ALL people around the world. A true symbol a musical talent hailed all across the world blurring race and color lines. How many singers can say they have achieved what he has?

    May he rest in peace.

  • Korean help

Last night I met up with my tutor at Athans Bakery. I have not been to it since it renovated and added a dining area. The rain  has been so excessive and dreary of late. I noticed that you order from one side and then bring the food to your table. Then in the dining room, you can pick up your drinks as the order comes up. There is no table service and they appreciate it if you bus your own table. The $8 credit card minimum was no problem either.

We try to do one hour for me and one hour for my tutor. She used the 2/18/09 session #1 MIT Winter intermediate level hand out. I must say that was the only time I went. But this time around with her help and possibly my further study, I felt very comfortable with the material. Initially back in February I felt very lost and did not understand anything at all. I learned about past/present and polite and honorific verb endings and irregular contractions for verbs and adjectives. Turns out with all the drama/movies that I have watched, I knew alot of them naturally especially with the contractions. As each session proceeds, I do feel a bit more confident.

My tutor things that my pronunciation is very good. But I always want to strive to be better. I don't have too much confidence to have more complicated sentences. But learning more about particles, "from", "and", "to" etc have helped. I guess it is more repetition. Also I guess to be a real serious student, I have to stop not trying to spell and really do it. It is the only way I think.

My original goal was to learn enough to not need subtitles, but I realize having a more serious study to include spelling, writing in addition to listening comprehension and conversational skills helps alot. Right now I can read aloud stuff but not necessarily understand what I am reading. But when I can read aloud stuff or understand something, it is a very exciting feeling indeed.
